Claim to be single not just for the night but for the whole weekend
Slather on sunblock every hourAnd of course for the bold and brazen…. get a Brazilian Wax!
On the holiday where we are in our teeny bikinis, hot pants, and g-strings, this beauty ritual is definitely the most loathed… but most necessary one there is. But, some might argue that this is far from a spa treatment and more like torture. What do you expect though? You’re getting hair ripped and stripped from one of the most sensitive parts on your body! While some women use Veet, Nair, or even razors to neaten up the hair down there, lets be honest - getting a Brazilian Wax is the only method that will get you completely clean.
So, StyleBermuda sent junior editor Chenae Rodrigues to not just look for salons that offer Brazilians but also go through the experience first hand so she can tell you to expect.
What exactly IS a Brazilian Wax?
A waxing newbie and you’re too scared to ask? Don’t worry, we’re here to help.A French Wax or Partial Brazilian refers to removing all hair except for a vertical strip in the front (aka the landing strip). The buttocks may or may not be included.
A Brazilian Wax is the full monty and includes the removal of all hair in the pelvic area, front and back, including the buttocks!
A First Timer’s Trip to Brazil
After hearing through the grapevine that Yanna at Strands is one of the island’s best Brazilian waxers, my editor and I opted to book an appointment with her.
It’s all about the wax
The first thing that relieved some of my nerves was finding out that Strand’s uses hard wax instead or soft wax with strips. I’ve heard some horror stories about Brazilian waxes with strips – from the intense pain, to affects it can have on your skin. Yanna informed me that the wax is infused with tea tree oil, which exfoliates and heals the skin. It also makes the wax smoother for the hair to pop out easier.
Prepare for the pain
For all my 1st timers: prep yourself for some of the most intense pain you’ve felt (outside of childbirth of course).
You can pop an Asprin an hour before your visit, which may or may not help, but it doesn’t hurt to try.
The most pain you will experience is the hair removal at the top of the “V,” but, thinking about the outcome will get you through. This is why having an excellent waxer – someone quick and skilled - is most important.
Make sure your technician does not apply wax to the same area more than once. This can further irritate your skin – and safety is far more important than anything else.
Waxing is a forgettable pain… You’re going to tell your girlfriends “that shit hurt” but you are also going to make sure you book your Brazilian wax appointments regularly. One comfort that I got is Yanna knows you’re going to experience pain, so she got used to my vulgar language as she ripped away!
The thorough job she did was a perfect 10. After the wax performed something called ‘flicking’, or ‘rolling’, where she rolls the wax over the area to clean the untidy hairs up. Other technicians sometimes use tweezers to finish the job.
Here’s some advice from Yanna at Strands:
Do not wax the day before or day you are going to swim. Salt water will sting, as your area will be even more sensitive from the wax.
If you’re thinking about getting a Brazilian and you Veet or Nair- Stop! Veeting can leave ingrown hairs that will be harder to wax off.
In doubt about this particular beauty treatment? Ponder on the words skincare and waxing goddess Marilyn Jaeger: “If you want to sell the house, you’ve got to mow the lawn.”
Style Bermuda highly recommends every female to take a trip to Yanna at Strands
